BIO Opens Nominations for George Washington Carver and Rosalind Franklin Awards

There is quite a bit to celebrate at the BIO IMPACT Digital | Ag & Environment Conference this September.

In addition to a reimagined event, this year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rosalind Franklin’s birth and the legacy of George Washington Carver.

Each year, the George Washington Carver Award for Innovation in Industrial Biotechnology is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to building the biobased economy. 

Last year in Des Moines, former two-term Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack was the winner of the award—a fitting recipient for an honor named after another famous Iowan (Ed Note: While George Washington Carver  was actually born in Missouri, his degree from Iowa State University makes him at least a partial Iowan in our book.)

This year, the winner of the George Washington Carver award will participate in a fireside chat as part of the BIO IMPACT Digital programming.

And as we celebrate the life of Rosalind Franklin, BIO is looking forward to honoring the eighth all-time recipient of the Rosalind Franklin Award for Leadership in Industrial Biotechnology and Agriculture.  Each year, the award is presented to a woman leading the charge in strengthening the biobased economy.

Last year, co-founder of Ginkgo Bioworks, Reshma Shetty, received the prestigious honor.

“I am more encouraged than ever by the trajectory of this industry,” Shetty said in her acceptance remarks. “We’ve had amazing advances in the foundational technology of our field.”

The winner of the 2020 Rosalind Franklin Award will join the George Washington Carver Award recipient in a fireside chat at BIO IMPACT Digital.
